Simple Vietnamese (tiếng Việt) vocabulary


  1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 = Mot, Hai, Ba, Bon, Nam, Sau, Bay, Tam, Chin, Muoi
  2. chrysanthemum = cây hoa cúc
  3. close = đóng cửa (“dom ker”)
  4. contradict = mâu thuẫn
  5. could (you)? = bạn có thể?
  6. Dangerous = nguy hiểm
  7. dead (or “die already”)(colloquial) = chết rồi
  8. die = chết
  9. discount = giảm giá
  10. elder brother/younger brother = anh trai/em trai
  11. elder sister/younger sister = chị gái / em gái
  12. fine (colloquial) = khỏe  (For completeness, “I am fine” = “anh khỏe” or “em khỏe”)  [In Vietnamese speech, generally, a male refers to himself as “anh”, a female refers to herself as “em”.  I mention generally, because it gets a bit complicated depending on your age in relation to the listener; I shall not go into that here]
  13. good = tốt
  14. Grandfather = ông nội
  15. had breakfast? (colloquial) = An sang chua?
  16. had your meal? (colloquial) = An com chua?  [the Vietnamese people use this question as a form of greeting, somewhat like an ice-breaker]
  17. Happy birthday = chúc em/anh sinh nhật vui vẻ
  18. Happy Christmas = Chúc mừng Giáng sinh
  19. Happy New Year = Chúc mừng năm mới or Nam Moi nhieu vui vẻ (“New Year with much happiness”)
  20. headache = đau đầu
  21. how? (asking after someone, i.e. how are you?) (colloquial) = khỏe không?
  22. influenza/flu = bệnh cúm
  23. insurance = bảo hiểm
  24. know / don’t know = biết / không biết
  25. love = yêu
  26. morning; noon; afternoon/evening; night (reference to time) = buổi sáng; buổi trưa; buổi chiều; buổi tối
  27. new = mới
  28. no/none/zero = không
  29. no more already = không đã
  30. not fine (colloquial)  = không khỏe
  31. not okay = không được
  32. okay = được
  33. open (ie shop) = mở cửa (“mah ker”)
  34. problem = vấn đề
  35. Prosperous New Year = Nam moi thinh vuong
  36. Right? (seeking confirmation) =  Phải?
  37. sad = buồn
  38. sleep = đi ngủ
  39. sleepy = buồn ngủ
  40. sorry/pardon = xin lỗi
  41. speak=nói
  42. Sure = Chắc chắn (not sure = không chắc chắn)
  43. think = nghĩ
  44. today = hôm nay
  45. tonight = đêm nay
  46. Try = cố gắng len .. or cố len
  47. Turn left = queo trái (or quay trái)
  48. Turn right = queo phải (or quay phải)
  49. understand / don’t understand = hiểu / không hiểu
  50. understand? (when asking or seeking confirmation) = hiểu không?
  51. Wake/Funeral = Dam tang
  52. walk = đi bộ
  53. wasting food = lãng phí thực phẩm
  54. where? = ở đâu?
  55. who is there/that? = là ai vay?
  56. who? = ai?
  57. work/working = làm việc
  58. Yes = có  (or vâng)
  59. (You) have to be crazy to survive in life = Khung khung moi ton tai duoc
